An electronic safety system for firearms
Lifeguard is an electronic safety system for firearms. In the event that a gun owner's firearm is removed from its case (or a gun-safe, glove-box or bureau drawer) by an unauthorized individual – or tampered with in any way – the Lifeguard sensor and transmitting device would send an alarm signal to the gun owner's smartphone, alerting him or her to the situation and prompting further appropriate action on their part. The design intent of the Lifeguard system is to reduce or eliminate the incidence of mass shootings, gun suicides, and tragic accidents that involve the misappropriation or theft of firearms.
Features & Benefits
The Lifeguard system would consist of a small, battery-powered motion-sensor and RF transmitter – powered by a compact lithium-ion cell, and mobile – and a downloadable smartphone application. The sensor/transmitter could be affixed by a peel-and-stick adhesive backing to the stock of a long gun or the grip of a handgun. The sensor/transmitter could also be affixed to the latch, door, or lid of a gun case, gun safe, or gun rack, such that when the case, safe, or rack is opened, a circuit is broken, and the RF transmitter activated. When the gun itself, or the container in which it is kept, is lifted, moved, opened, or tampered with in any manner, the Lifeguard motion-sensor will detect the disturbance – and activate its RF transmitter to establish contact with the owner's smartphone. The smartphone application will enable the smartphone to recognize and categorize this call as a Lifeguard alert; and the phone will immediately respond with an audible alarm tone – distinct from and louder than the phone's normal ringtone – and with vibration. The tone and vibration will be repeated at an interval of a few seconds, and continue to repeat until the owner has received and acknowledged the alert. The firearm owner, thus alerted, will then take the action he or she deems appropriate.About this page
