The Stress Button/ Panic Button is a specially designed alert that, when activated by a machine user, immediately sends a silent alarm to a 911 dispatch center or directly to police headquarters should one find herself at the mercy of a robber, or even if she spots a suspicious individual nearby. The Stress Button/Panic Button could be an added feature to ATM machines and corresponding ATM/debit/credit cards, wherein once a user inserts his/her card into the machine and inputs his/her PIN, a disguised menu option could pop up in addition to the standard directives. Pressing this button, or entering a separate code, would send the alert to law enforcement. In this way, the criminal is none the wiser, and the victim is able to avoid provoking the robber into a panic. With the Stress Button/Panic Button , the victim can secretly call for help, which is likely to arrive quickly before the criminal can get away. In the event of a kidnapping, the ATM card could come equipped with a GPS component, allowing police to follow the progress of the victim and apprehend the robber before he/she is able to force the victim to go to multiple locations, wiping out her cash before harming him/her. Implementation of a system such as the Panic Button/Stress Button could conceivably cut down on ATM theft, saving consumers and financial institutions a considerable amount of money as well as hassle.
