The Ice Away

A Snow-Shovel with Integrated Light and Heat Sources

The Ice Away is a lightweight, sturdily built snow-shovel featuring integrated lighting and heating sources that make it unique, and uniquely useful – for The Ice Away would not only move snow, like any good snow shovel: it would also melt it and provide light when doing so.

Features & Benefits

The Ice Away would feature a square-end, scoop-style blade fabricated in tool- grade, aluminum alloy, a sturdy fiberglass or injection-molded plastic shaft, and a T- type handle – and in these respects, The Ice Away would strongly resemble other high-quality, lightweight snow shovels. The Ice Away, however, is not only a stout snow shovel but also a battery-powered tool. The hollow handle shaft of the Ice Away shovel will contain a snap-locking, covered battery compartment for three to four D-cell batteries, and above this compartment will be a slide-switch with four settings: Off; Light; Heat, and Heat & Light. In the “Off” mode, The Ice Away will be a fully manual snow shovel. With the switch set to “Light,” 2 strips of powerful LEDs (Light-Emitting Diodes), positioned along the sides of the shovel head, will be activated to illuminate the user's path and working area – and provide a high- visibility light that can be seen, for example, by approaching motorists and others in the immediate vicinity. In the “Heat” mode, the shovel blade will be heated by a wire heating element hermetically sealed within the shovel blade. This wire will heat up due to electrical resistance to the current passing through it, and enable The Ice Away user to more easily dig into congealed snow and ice, softening and melting these substances, and shoveling as he (or she) goes. In the “Heat & Light” mode, both the light and the blade-heater will be activated. As an additional consideration, The Ice Away might be equipped with a small bin or reservoir – a conical container fastened to the underside of the shovel's handle shaft – that could hold and dispense rock salt. The bottom of this snap-top bin could feature a spring-locking, spring-released, fan-shaped dispensing mouth – operated by a trigger below the shovel handle – that will release rock salt as desired. In this manner, the user might dispense a portion of salt onto an icy surface either prior to shoveling, or after the surface has been cleared. The Ice Away snow shovel presents itself as a tool of uncommon utility and convenience, a weapon against winter. Sturdy and lightweight in construction, The Ice Away would offer a level of performance well above that of any other well-built snow shovel. With its LED lights, The Ice Away would serve as an illuminating device, work light, and safety light – a terrific design feature, considering that much snow-shoveling is done in the darkness of winter mornings and late-afternoons. In addition, the heated blade of The Ice Away would make shoveling far easier, especially when the shoveler is dealing with frozen solid snow and ice. And, the optional rock-salt dispenser could enable the shoveler to easily salt an area of driveway, sidewalk, steps or other surfaces once they've been cleared of ice and snow. Each of these design features, combined in a single, durable, tough and lightweight shovel, makes The Ice Away unique, and uniquely useful. As such, The Ice Away should prove to be the ideal winter implement for millions of consumers whose winter chores include clearing walks, steps, and driveways of ice and snow.
